Contact Us: editor@cahersleenews.com leonardodonnell@eircom.net Welcome, to this the very first edition of your local newsletter. In publishing this newsletter we hope to bring you news, information, issues and celebrations that occur in your community. It is intended that this newsletter be driven by you, the residents of Caherslee. Therefore, we ask that you to let us know of any information which you think may be of benefit or interest to others in your community, however trivial it may seem to you. Issues and concerns relating to our area of Tralee are of particular interest to us. We want to share these issues and concerns with others in our community. In addition to this we would like to initiate debate among those who are concerned about these issues. Through this process the community can pool its resources (experience and knowledge) and lobby the appropriate authorities more effectively. Example of one of the issues that has arisen in recent times include: Traffic Management: Problems: speeding vehicles on the main road, difficulties in exiting residential areas, parking in residential areas by non-residents, parking on the main road. Solutions: traffic calming measures, traffic lights, parking permits, installation of bollards etc. DO YOU HAVE SUGGESTIONS / SOLUTIONS TO THIS OR OTHER PROBLEMS? HOW DOES THE COMMUNITY BECOME PRO-ACTIVE REGARDING THESE PROBLEMS ? Are you involved in an organization, society, group or club that others might like to join? Is there an event (social, business, meeting etc.) happening soon that people might like to know about? Let us know and we will pass on the details. Celebrations/Announcements/etc. Do you know of such events that are due in the near future? Is there someone who is celebrating something special soon? Is there something you want to announce locally? Please let us know and we will help get the message out there! If you have a business or service you want known locally or a promotion that your business is running, let us know. Personal ads. are also welcome. Space for ads etc. may vary from issue to issue. Contact details below. Radon Gas – Information Meeting There will be a public meeting on the effects of Radon Gas on Monday, 28th February, 2005 in the Meadowlands Hotel at 8pm. Experts in this field will address the meeting. All who are interested are welcome to attend this meeting. Children/Kids We aim to please the younger readers also and provide a dedicated space for them in this newsletter. Jokes, ideas for fun, educational tips, book titles, games etc. will be included and ideas are welcome from young people. Send us your photographs or drawings and we will do our best to publish them. There might even be a competition! History Many of you are new to this area of Tralee and perhaps to Co. Kerry. In this newsletter, from time to time we will include historical fact and memories of historical events that happened locally. Campaign for Bus Service for Caherslee Area It has come to our attention recently that there is a strong campaign being organized to add this area to the public bus routes already in existence in Tralee. It is essential that this bus service is provided at the earliest opportunity, for all concerned. Many residents, young and old, would welcome such a service, most particularly during the winter months. Not only will it give the older residents of this area more flexibility and access to town but it will also reduce the nightmare of dealing with traffic congestion and lack of parking in town for those who do use the service. Question: Why does the GAA not provide parking in their Caherslee field, for their patrons? Question: Can Balloonagh Primary School provide more parking for parents and teachers? Send us your questions and we will print them. New Bar and Shopping Facilities It is hoped that the people of our community will have new facilities such as a bar, restaurant, and shops from this summer in Mounthawk. Currently under construction, this new site is ideally suited for many residents of the area. Parking at least should not be a problem. Furthermore it is encouraging to see that so many fine, old trees have been retained and should add to the overall character of the site. Mounthawk School Since the end of 2004 the State now owns the school at Mounthawk. Your tax has been ploughed into the school through funding etc. since it has opened. I ask the question then: Should the school be made more available for the local community, to use its facilities in the evening and most particularly during the summer months, when the facility is not in use? Surely as tax payers we have that right! After all why should various community and sporting groups have to pay for facilities elsewhere when we ‘own’ a fine facility locally? Your views on this matter would be welcome. ‘Umbrella’ Residents Association Does this area need an Umbrella Residents Association? The thinking behind this is that each existing Residents Association in the area would nominate two of its members to this Umbrella Association. This Umbrella Association would then be given the brief of lobbying the relevant authorities on behalf of the whole area. This Association would not, in any way, take over the role of the local Residents Associations but would rather enhance that role especially in regard to issues that concern the majority of residents. Do You have something to RENT or SELL ? Is there something You want to BUY? Is there a tradesman You would like to recommend for his/her work? Is there a Bargain in shopping, holidays etc. that You wish to advertise or bring to the notice of others? Is there a match or game You want people to know about? Have You lost something locally ? Do You want to organize a local meeting? etc….etc…. Please contact us and we will print it here for You. Information Required – Let us know! Church Services Community Games Information Important School Dates or Functions Society Meetings – date, time and place Club Games/Training – GAA, Soccer, Rugby, Golf etc. etc….etc… Local Business Contact Directory From time to time we will include a local Directory of Businesses and Services for you to keep handy. This Directory will include a Calendar of Local events, religious services, social events etc. If you want to be included in this Directory please contact us using the details below. Refuse Collections and Recycling If you have any opinions in this matter we would like to hear from you. For instance, could we as a community, establish and maintain a site where we could develop our own composting facility? What needs to be done to achieve this? What are the pros and cons of such an initiative? etc. What are your views on the present manner in which your refuse is collected and the charge being applied for this service? QUIZ – TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE! 1.On what date did the latest tsunamis cause devastation in South East Asia? 2.Who captained the Kerry Senior Football team to victory in the All-Ireland of 2004? 3.How many wives did Henry VIII have? 4.In which year were the current Irish vehicle registration plates introduced? 5.In which country is Mecca located? Message The thrust of this Newsletter is to involve You the people of our community to think, plan and start initiatives and strategies which will essentially lead to our community becoming pro-active in the face of obstacles and issues that affect us in our daily lives. If we can deal with the issues and problems that do arise, from time to time, with the resources and experiences that we ourselves have, we will all benefit. If we wait for the appropriate authorities to act we might be waiting a long time! It is also likely that decisions will be made by outside agencies and authorities who will then impose these decisions upon us as a Community. Let us be informed so that we can debate these issues before and as they arise! Question: Could/should a small, enclosed public park be developed in our area? Agree / Disagree? Suggest a Location? [e.g. some of the area to the front of Mounthawk school fronting the main road] Benefits – Summertime location for young and old to meet . Finally The layout and the content and length of this newsletter will depend on you too! Please do send us information as outlined above. You can add gardening details, cooking information, website of interest, books/magazines you recommend, television channels or programmes of interest, radio programmes, where the best deals are to be had, recommend a restaurant, your favourite walking route etc…..etc….
