Il Papa - Johannes Paulus II – ‘The Great’
Many of us, of all religions and none, recognised and witnessed the immense contribution which
Pope John Paul II gave to the world over the past quarter of a century or more. In matters of faith,
hope and love he had few equals. May he enjoy his rest in the arms of the Lord.

New Format for Caherslee Community News
Until now this newsletter was in A4 format but from this edition onwards we have gone bigger with the A3 format.
This change has been as a result of the increased interest which you the reader has shown in the newsletter.
Many of you have contributed with your comments and ideas, for which we are grateful. There has also been
an increased interest from businesses to include advertising in the newsletter. We will continue to ensure that
this newsletter will be delivered to your home as each edition is published. Thank you again  for your interest.

Bus Service for Caherslee Area
Ed Ryan tells us that he has had a great reception  and support from the majority of people in the area in
his campaign to petition for the bus service for Caherslee. There is still time to add your name to the list of
signatories. You can do so by contacting us here at the newsletter by ‘phone or email and we will pass on the
details to Ed.

Traffic Issues
Many of you will notice, from time to time, that Pembroke Street is congested with traffic. Taxis and hackneys
are the usual culprits at night and especially at weekends. Parking at any time so close to traffic lights and
on a relatively narrow street shows the utmost disregard for other road users. More importantly there is a safety
issue to be addressed here as there are other premises from which pedestrians exit and enter near by. This
situation will continue until there is a serious accident or until enough people complain to the appropriate authorities.
The question needs to be asked as to how, on such a narrow street so near to traffic lights planning permission
was sought and granted for this business? Surely there are other locations close by which would not be as
dangerous or as restricting.

Website
Recently we have set up a site on the internet. This site, it is hoped will, be a vehicle through which you the
reader and people in the wider world can access this newsletter. We would like you to visit the site and
send on your comments, thoughts and anything that you think is relevant to the people of the area. Without the
input of you the people of our community this newsletter will fail in its aim to meet the needs of the community.

‘Umbrella’ Residents Association
Just to remind you that the inaugural meeting of this association is on:
Monday 9th May, 2005 in
The Grand Hotel, Denny St.
at 8.30pm
It has been suggested that each existing Residents Association in the area should send at least two
of their committee members to this meeting. All other interested residents are very welcome to attend.
Please try to attend this meeting. A presentation by a member of An Garda Siochana will centre on
home and neighbourhood security. It is also envisaged that the association can look towards the future
planning for the whole area and bring forward proposals which can be of benefit to all residents.
Your views and expertise on related matters will be very much appreciated. If you cannot attend encourage
someone else from your area to attend.

Politicians on the Trail
As you may well be aware, and may even have had a visit already, many politicians are out ‘canvassing’.
Do take the opportunity to engage with them and let them know about the questions and concerns you
have about the area, the town or even national issues. It may even be worth your while writing these
down and therefore give each of them, regardless of your affiliation or otherwise, the same message!

Public Lighting
It has been brought to our notice, by an observant resident, that a number of the street lamps on the
main road are not functioning. Since January of this year the lights on poles numbered 13, 16, 29
and 32 have been out of order. Since March some have been fixed. The questions we are asking are:
Is this situation replicated throughout the town? and
Should it be necessary for residents to repeatedly enquire about this before action is taken?

Hedges , Bushes and Trees
At this time of the year many people like to take a walk in the neighbourhood. One point that come up in
conversations time and time again is overgrown hedges and bushes. Not only do they not look nice
when neglected, they become harder to keep as time goes on. More importantly people have commented
on the danger that these over grown plants pose for people who use the footpaths. Bushes and hedges
should be cut back to your boundary wall and tree branches need to be cut or trimmed if lower than 6 feet.

Advertise Your Business - Trade
If you would like to advertise something or service locally, please contact us.
Caherslee Community News is distributed to each house – at least 850 houses – monthly.
The newsletter is also available in most of the shops in the area.

Tralee Tidy Towns
Could your area do with a clean up or a small improvement in the way it looks?
Is there something you can do to help?
The Tidy Towns Committee will be launching a competition for groups who take on work
to clean up an area in need of attention. Details later.

Road Surfaces
Many of you have commented on the poor condition of the road surfaces throughout the town. There
are sections of the main road in Caherslee that have worn badly and repairs that have been
carried out have been unsatisfactory. It is only four years since the main road was surfaced. In
planning this work more care should have been taken with the choice of material used. The
volume of traffic and the consequent wearing of the surface should have been factored into the
process of surfacing the road. Is there any accountability for the money spent  ?
Was the work guaranteed and for how many years?

There are also some black spots on roads most of us use each day. By black spots
I really mean ‘pot holes’.
In Stacks Villas, about 20 metres, before the pedestrian crossing.
The area of the roundabout, at the junction of Matt Talbot Road and High Street.
The length of Rock St. from The Brogue Inn to Our Lady and St. Brendan’s church.

These are only some of the examples that come to mind.

There are X number of vehicle tax payers in this town, paying an average of X euro per vehicle.
Surely this money or a significant % of it should be used to repair / surface the streets of this town?
This money should be ring-fenced for this purpose only!

A Vatican Experience (Part 1)
Even the most well adorned book cannot portray the beauty of Rome, the Eternal City and in particular the
Vatican. This writer had the great privilege of privileged access to the Vatican Library and that great
sanctum sanctorum - the Sistine Chapel - while on a pilgrimage to visit a granduncle, Father Leonard E. Boyle
in the early 1990’s. Father Eugene, as we knew him, was Prefect of the Vatican Library.

Presenting as a hungry and exhausted inter-railer at the Vatican Passport office with a smattering of Latin
salvaged from earlier experiences in the Green was not enviable. However Father Eugene - as we knew him
- appeared much to my relief, dismissed the passport bureaucrats and ushered me out of harms way to the
Vatican Library. There I was treated to a most welcome and memorable cup of coffee at a small room
attaching to the side of the Library. He was as astonished to see me as I was to see him. Had I come a day
earlier I would have missed him as he was away on business. An impecunious student, such as I was then,
would never think of going about the mundane business of purchasing a stamp beforehand and posting it!
As luck would have it he was there and how much at home did I feel!

Being a young Kerryman, the sight of exquisite beauty is common - but the beauty presented to the eye at
every opening in the Vatican has to be seen to be believed. Michaelangelo’s Pieta, the embrace of
St. Peter’s Square, Bernini’s sculptures on high and much more. Much more in fact, it also involves the air,
the light, the august atmosphere, the staccato rhythms of the chattering people, the awe amongst speechless
groups, aghast of their surroundings. The beauty cannot be known by the mind alone but has to be witnessed
in corpore!. So I will abandon description!

Before long  I was introduced to the staff of the Library, shown around its various sections and from then to
the main reading room which was lit up by huge windows, with magnificent frescoes all round. Scholars
worked on huge ornate reading desks in the quiet solemnity of study. Father Eugene showed me famous
love letters from Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn, the Vatican Virgil and the score of Allegri’s famous Miserere - just
some of jealously guarded treasures among the two million books and 150,000 or so manuscripts from all
parts of the world. There were old books from subjects as diverse as architecture to cooking to astronomy
– all unique and celebrated.

A visit to the manuscript repository was fascinating. This consisted of a subterranean vault accessed by a two
foot thick door. In earlier times this was the headquarters of the Vatican guard. His own living-quarters was
a roof-top apartment adjoining the library and providing an astonishing  view of the Vatican. Of particular pride
was thisa roof-top garden where Father Eugene tended a crop of lemon and oranges trees!

An early morning visit to the Sistine Chapel meant that I was the sole visitor as some workers restored
the Last Judgement. I lay down on the ground and poured over probably the greatest fresco ever done.
As much as a great place is made even greater by great company , I think the reverse is true when I
recall the wonderful time I had with Father Eugene over evening meals under the evening starry skies
in the Piazza Navona. Through the candlelight, he recounted many hilarious anecdotes from his
years as a Dominican priest. One I recall was when, as a respected Padre, he hopped on a bus
and asked two young Dominicans whether they believed all that stuff that St. Thomas Aquinas
had written - much to their dismay!

Financial pressures, then the common daily burden of a student, ensured a hasty but not uneventful
exit from Rome to here. Suffice to say that I will always remember my time in the Vatican in the company
of a such lovely man, who cast a spell of the love of learning over me that I hope will endure. It is nice to
think that the next time I visit Rome I will be able to visit his grave in his beloved San Clemente, the
Basilica of the Irish Dominican community and see on his grave the words:

Omnia disce, videbis postea nihil esse superfluum
(Learn everything, you will see thereafter there is nothing worthless).

Tralee

By Jerry Daly

To this simple paper I put my simple pen
'Tis not too easy to decide how to begin
For I wish to write about my dear Tralee
And I'm not too sure where to find the key

I'm writing 'cause I feel it's a place unique
And once discovered one need ne'er again seek
Such are it's qualities that mere words can't describe
And that's the task before me, me a mere scribe

By night or day whether wet or dry
In Tralee I always feel on a high
The air is fresh, the mood is bright
My heart is always gay and light

Though ‘tis far I’ve roved by sea and air
I’ve ne’er found the likes of its atmosphere
In other places I’ve felt old and blue
But here I always feel young and new

Now ‘tis oft I ask why this is so
And I wonder why I’m never low
In life I’ll ne’er leave this blessed sod
Perhaps ‘tis to Tralee that God gave the nod

Why do winds of freshness always blow
And waters of gladness always flow
I’ll never know, the truth to tell
Tralee is the town I love so well.

We would like to thank Jerry and all other contributors in this Issue of Caherslee Community News.We will be including more
stories, poems etc. in later Issues

Broadband Internet Access
This service brings many benefits to surfing the web. It is a welcome improvement, as many of you
have experienced, on what preceded it, if not in the developed world!

Some facts from a recent OECD report:
At present in Ireland we have the most expensive and slowest Broadband connection available
within OECD countries. We have a 2Mpbs system. In France for 35euro per month you get 80 TV
channels, unlimited national and local 'phone calls and a 20Mpbs Broadband connection. In Northern Ireland,
with 135,000 customers there is 100% broadband coverage, and a line failure rate of 1%. Coverage
in the Republic is 55% and there is an avareage line failure rate of 25%.

Road Funding
County Kerry has just been allocated 56.2million euro for road projects for the coming year.
A significant sum indeed.
According to Central Statistics Office figures Co. Kerry has the 6th highest number of private cars
in Licensing Authority Areas = 52,989. Private car tax income for Co. Kerry accounts for euro18,615,629million.
That is an avareage of euro351 per car. These figures do not include vehicle licensing tax for commercial
vehicles and HGV.

Question:
Are we getting our fair share?
Co. Kerry is still playing catch-up in regard to the condition of our roads while other counties have been doing very well.

Photographs on the Website
Those of you who visit our website www.cahersleenews.com will see some photographs taken in the
area recently. More photos will follow. We are particularly interested in (a) photos of gardens and
(b) photos of areas or places which are neglected i.e. small public areas – where a little work by local
people could really make a difference and (c) places or spots on the roads or paths that need attention,
such as potholes, drains, manholes, kerbs etc.
Please let us know if you have any places in mind to suit the above.

Who Would Be a Teacher?
Many young teachers are being treated unfairly – 11 hours work a week or less is not uncommon.
Decreasing the pupil-teacher ratio would help and it would also improve delivery of services.
Holidays for these teachers = no pay!
Job security does not exist either.
How can the system improve if new teachers are treated so poorly?

Home and Neighbourhood Security
We have been in contact with the Crime Prevention Office – Community Relations of An Garda Siochana
at the Tralee station. Sgt. Noel O' Connell has forwarded some very useful information. It is our intention
to include more articles on this subject in subsequent editions

The first installment:

Securing Your Home – Lighting

In urban areas the likelihood of intruders being seen is greately increased by the presence of adequate
security lighting around the house.
Lighting should be downward facing and should illuminate windows, doors and any recessed areas
lights should be fitted to the front and rear of your house

Types of Lights include:
Passive Infrared Movement Detectors
Timer Switches
Dusk to Dawn Lighting (photo electric cell activated)

Intruders will feel exposed where adequate lighting exists and the chances of detection and identification
are also increased.

The design of your house will dictate the type of lights required.
