Caherslee Umbrella Group of Residents Associations
On Monday night the 9th May 2005 in The Grand Hotel, Denny Street an exploratory meeting was held to gauge if there was an
interest in setting up a forum for all Residents Associations in the Caherslee and adjoining areas. Representatives from many areas
turned up for the meeting and a good discussion took place. The general consensus was that such a forum or ‘umbrella’ association
would be welcome.
This type of forum or association would give all residents an input and would act as a focus and a resource when it comes to seeking
support in order to lobby the local authority, to question decisions on planning and related issues, to object to unsatisfactory services
etc. and to plan for the future well being of the people of this area. Next meeting in September 2005.

Examinations
We are sure that all of you would join us in sending our best wishes to all those students who are currently preparing for State
Examinations.

Congratulations
We would also like to send or best wishes to those among us who have recently celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation and those
who have received First Holy Communion.

Caherslee Community News
In the coming weeks we will be conducting a survey about this newsletter. We will choose, at random, about 100 homes in the area.
The reason for this is to get feedback from people on various aspects of the newsletter such as - content, layout, and general
commentary. Please feel free to comment. You can also add your comments to the Guestbook on our website - such comments will
remain confidential.

Holidays and Securing Your Home
Many of you will be going on extended holidays soon and now is the time to plan ways to ensure that your homes are as safe from
burglars as possible.
Do inform some neighbours that you will be away.
Do invest in timer switches for lighting.
Do ensure that outdoor security lighting works.
Do stop deliveries such as post etc.
Do use locks, if fitted, to your windows.
Do ask a neighbour to cut your grass.
There are many other common sense jobs to be done - spend the time thinking about these and don’t come home to regret not having
done them!

Holidays - Beware Children At Play!
Very soon many of our younger members of the community will be getting holidays from school.
Caution is needed when driving in residential areas at these times. Anticipate the danger that may await you around the next corner or
that may suddenly appear from behind that parked car. Look for the signs of life which during other times is not there!

Tidy Towns
A special effort should be made to prepare our individual areas for the Tidy Towns Competition which will be judged during the
month of July this year. Simple but effective measures such as grass cutting, weeding along the path where necessary and maybe
some pruning of bushes and hedges that border roadways. Individual housing areas will be judged. It would be great if some of our
areas were awarded for their efforts.

Ring Of Kerry Cycle
This worthy annual charity cycling event takes place this year on Saturday 2nd of July. The cycle commences from the International
Hotel in Killarney. The cycle is 113 miles long and can be done at your own pace. Four major charities will benefit from the funds
that are raised.

Objecting to Planning
The residents of Parc na Dun have had success in recent times with their objection to a proposed new housing development which if
it got the go-ahead would have used their entrance off the main road.
The residents of The Grove, The Orchard, Mercy Mounthawk and adjoining areas are awaiting news of their objection to a new
multi-storey, high density development which is proposed for the area near Mounthawk School. We wish them well in this endeavour.

It has been brought to our attention that the owners of an area of land opposite the new pub-restaurant development, at the
roundabout, in Mounthawk are seeking to
re-zone this land from Leisure/Tourism to Housing Medium Density. This is variation to
Tralee Town Development Plan 2003 - 2009. We are asking all interested parties and other residents of the Caherslee area to unite
in submitting objections and observations re. this proposal, in support of the residents of the immediate areas. Details of the site
location and photographs are posted on our website. Contact us at the newsletter before
June 18th and we will pass on the details.
You can also send your own submission to :

Mr. Michael Scannell
Town Clerk
Tralee Town Council
Princes Street
Tralee.

Unless we stand together on these issues changes in our neighbourhood will be imposed on us.
It is not that residents object to development as such, but residents will object to the type and scale of development if it in any way
does not fit in the overall scale or plan for the area that  already exists.

An Garda Siochana
We would like to thank Sgt. Noel O’ Connell for the information he gave us in the last edition of the newsletter. Noel spent many
minutes outlining some statistics about home and neighbourhood security at our meeting on May 9th last. He also gave some very
good advice on how to prevent being targeted by burglars and prowlers.
Our local Community Garda is James Hurley. If there are issues and or concerns you wish to express do contact us.

Vatican visit (Part II)
In the first part of this article I referred to the majestic beauty of the Vatican and also to a visit there I made as a student in the 1990
s to my late granduncle, Fr Leonard (Eugene) Boyle.
A Dominican, he was Prefect of the Vatican Library and had charge of the running of the institution which has for hundreds of years
been the centre of learning and culture in the Vatican since the 15th century. While he wasn t prefect for all that time, Father Eugene
did during his thirteen year tenure until 1998 initiate the digitalisation of many of its manuscripts allowing greater access to its
treasures worldwide. These included -and I assume still do - about two million books and over 250,000 manuscripts dating from
ancient times.
The Library is not accessible by the public but only to research scholars on the recommendation of their respective universities. In
my case access was provided neither on the basis of scholarship nor recommendation but simply - and in classical Italian fashion -
because I was member of the family. How often did Fr. Eugene (as we in said family referred to him as) say When in Rome do as
the Romans do!
His provision of my enviable access to the Library and indeed the Sistine Chapel to boot was not the only illustration of how he
believed in this motto. This was borne out further while he was bringing me one night to a restaurant in Piazza Navona. This most
famous of Roman squares is one of city s liveliest and is adorned by three great fountains and the marvellous church of Santa Agnese
in Agone. St Agnes paid with her life in refusing to give in to the lasciviousness of her tormentors and renounce her faith. The facade
of the church was designed by the sculptor Bernini‘s great rival Borromini. Directly opposite this great church, Bernini has a figure in
the fountain taunting his rival above!
But back to my story! Fr. Eugene while bringing me across a narrow street during a darkening evening attempted to exact a piece of
fiery Roman passion with the aid of his umbrella on a the back of regular Italian motorcyclist who nearly caused me to be
permanently embedded on the cobbled ground. This near public flogging of a Roman citizen and even more auspicious - a mounted
citizen of the Roman motorcycling class - by the revered padre had all the artistry he regularly boasted he had as a minor for the
North Cork hurling team back in the forties. Alas, there was a hole in his hurley on this occasion as he missed the motorcyclist s ear
by a puck. I often wonder had he connected would he have had to flee to the hills of Rome the way Moses had when he slew the
unfortunate Egyptian slave driver in Exodus? Had the motorcyclist connected with me I have often since wondered how I would
have compared to the other works of art in that august of august squares. What would be the inscription? Would a fourth fountain
have been erected? How many tourists would say to themselves - Now that s what I call a work of art! Would the executioner ever
have been identified or would he remain among the pantheon of the mystery assassins such as those as Collins and JFK? Perish the
thought of such a terrible vista! Anyhow a meal with the revered granduncle followed.
The ability to recount a good story over at meal times was always an outstanding trait of Fr. Eugene. I remember a few he told me
over candlelight one or two of which I have already related. One story related to around the time of his appointment to head the
Vatican Library in 1984. He recalled that, one day in the late 1960s, he had attempted to enter the library in the company of a young
woman.
Though he had been engaged in research at the library for many years, he found his entry barred on account of the woman's attire;
miniskirts, the Swiss Guard explained, were not permitted. Fr. Eugene, with his storied eloquence and convoluted logic, managed to
convince the guard to bend the rules - by averaging the length of the skirt in question and his own ankle-length Dominican habit. Both
visitors were duly admitted.

Dear Editor,
I am a resident of Lios Carraig and enjoy reading your newsletter.
Like many of my fellow residents I feel it necessary to go well out onto the main road before I can even see whether it is safe to
leave Lios Carraig, in my car. The other morning I was trying to do the same thing and was beeped out of it by a car coming from
town. I can understand the frustration and did return a beep as a kind acknowledgement.
But I will appeal to other road users to understand the frustration of Lios Carraigites and Glencairnians who are just trying to use the
main road!

As mentioned in the last edition we will be seeking permission of home owners to take photos. of their gardens during the summer
and place these on the website.
We will also be looking for areas that need to be highlighted - such as potholes, poor drainage, damaged kerbs and footpaths and
areas prone to illegal parking.

Traffic Problems
Traffic problems that do exist especially for those exiting from there areas onto the main road may ease now that the schools will be
winding down for the summer.
We will conduct traffic surveys this summer at peak times and later on compare the figures with peak times during the school
months.
On behalf of the residents of Lios Carraig and Glencairn we have initiated discussions with Tralee Town Council and Kerry County
Council planning departments with regard to submissions for traffic management at the entrance to Lios Carraig. More news on this
later.
Good news, at least the Council(s) have surfaced some of the roads around town. This was long over-due and hopefully they will
continue to prioritise other roads such as Rock St. and  Ballymullen in the near future.
If you have any points of interest to add on these topics do not hesitate to contact us.

School Transport Grant
A school transport grant is available to a parent wishing to send his/her child(ren) to Tralee Educate Together National School. This

Be Vigilant!
Being observant and noting changes and being prepared to do something about it is the key to ensuring that changes in our
environment and in our area do not go on without notice and that the required sanctions are imposed. We must be vigilant at all times.
The felling of mature trees at Mounthawk is one such example and we must applaud the individual(s) who brought this act to the
attention of the appropriate authorities.

Kerry Footballers
By Jerry Daly

For glorious grace and grandiose grandeur
For stately sublimity and supreme splendour
The cream of Gaelic sports hallowed hall
Is the excellent exquisite elegance of Kerry Football

Magnificent men with majestic mastery
Ardent artistry is their august armoury
With splendid style and superb skill
Wondrous warriors with worthy will

With polished panache they show the way
Mighty privileged are all who see them play
With dedication and daring they are driven
Their flair and flamboyance give us visions of heaven

No man alive do they ever fear
The word defeat they will not hear
They stride the field with power and vigour
Never can one doubt their valour

Now in Croke Park on All-Ireland day
When the going gets tough and some do pray
With expert endeavour and eager elan
Fierce fires of fervour they do fan

Their brilliance inspires us and fulfils our dreams
It rouses huge cheers and loud delight screams
Beautiful, bonny, brave and bold
Are our heroes who wear Kerry’s green and gold.

Best Wishes to Jack O’ Connor and the Lads in the 2005 Championship

The Grand Hotel - Denny St. Tralee.
Established in 1928.
The Grand Hotel is centrally located - in Tralee town centre. There is a comfortable old world atmosphere throughout - mahogany
furnishings and panelling adds to this old world charm. Samuels Restaurant is spacious and the cuisine is excellent.
The Pikeman Bar offers an extensive menu and also has an open fireplace adding to the atmosphere.
There are many well appointed meeting rooms ideally located in the town centre.
The 44 bedrooms are specially designed and furnished to a very high standard.
Step inside and retreat from the ordinary.
The staff are always friendly and the presence of many locals is a great stamp of approval.

Harry Potter - Emma Watson
Emma Watson stars in all Harry potter movies; she is one of the main actors. She becomes friends with Harry and Ron in the first
movie and stays friends with him that whole year and the next two. She is fifteen or sixteen. I think she is an inspiration to all girls
young and old that want to become actors. She makes a load of money but her parents won’t let her know how much money she is
making altogether until she is twenty one. In the three movies she is very talented, not that she isn’t in real life. She always hangs out
with Ruburt (Ron), Daniel Radcliff (Harry Potter). She sometimes thinks they can be a bit annoying. But they are boys. Girl power is
much better than boy power!
